Fusing patient safety with the use of infusion pumps
A woman is in labor when the infusion pump responsible for the steady delivery of medicine to her body begins alarming. Her husband, in an attempt to quiet the alarm, removes the set from the pump but doesnt know to close the clamp. As a result, the woman receives an infusion of medication that puts her into a coma.
Because of the frequency of tragic scenarios like this one, the JCAHO has issued a Sentinel Event Alert addressing the dangers of infusion pumps, which deliver intravenously measured doses of medication to patients.
