OIG to study therapy in SNFs
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) announced last month that it plans to investigate the quality of physical, occupational, and speech therapy provided to nursing home patients in 1999. The announcement is included in the OIGs work plan for 2001.
The OIGs study will help the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) do the following two things that were required by the Balanced Budget Refinement Act of 1999:
Create a way to ensure the appropriate use of Medicare outpatient therapy
Establish a payment policy based on diagnosis, functional stat
