Well over 300 digital systems were in place in the
United States as of September, but that number could triple, or grow 10-fold in
the next few years, if the results from a new clinical trial give radiologists
the evidence they need to invest in the sharper imaging. The National Cancer
Institute has funded a $27.5 million trial for 50,000 asymptomatic women to
determine whether digital mammography can beat the old reliable screen film in
detecting breast cancer. The results are due in around fall of 2004.
