October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and although it boosts efforts to get women focused on breast health, it can be a stressful month for breast center staff. As you gear up for this October, consider ways that staff can survive the stress.
With this in mind, Penny Lynch, RT(M), supervisor of the mammography department at Ray W. Moody Breast Center in Middleton, NY, decided to help relax her staff by teaching them how to cope with and reduce stress.
Lynch approached Joan Cesari, PhD, staff educator at the hospital, and asked her to devise a program to help the mammography department staff recover from the October push. What resulted was a two-part stress-management program aimed at reducing staff burnout--which is a real problem for RTs not only in October, but also throughout the year.
