When most women think of breast cancer screening exams, they think only of mammography, which the press consistently refers to as "the" early detection tool.
But the efficacy of mammography has been oversold, according to some medical malpractice experts, which can increase liability when mammography fails to detect a malignancy, even though a certain number of these misses are unavoidable. A clinical breast exam (CBE) is an important part of breast cancer detection, but the importance of the CBE is not understood by our patients and is not often promoted by our facilities. This column focuses on creating CBE policies as a component of a solid breast-cancer screening program that will help to both reduce our liability and protect our patients.
