Mammography Regulation and Reimbursement Report (Single Article)

Clinical vs. correlative breast exam: Weighing the value and the risk
September 2005

Product Description:

A clinical breast exam (CBE) is a critical component of mammography, and studies have shown that using the two together is superior to any other breast cancer detection method. When a patient enters your facility with a clinical finding, provide the interpreting physician with detailed CBE information to help him or her take an image of and correctly evaluate the finding. Verifying the presence of clinical findings, and appropriately documenting them can help avert a delay in diagnosis, which is the leading cause of malpractice lawsuits in breast imaging. Even though CBE is a critical component of mammograms, facilities need to determine whether there is value in performing a CBE on a patient when his or her physician has neither performed one nor adequately documented a finding or when the patient presents with a new finding. In my opinion, the risks of doing so-which include an increased risk of being sued for malpractice-outweigh the benefits.
