CMS has dramatically increased the number of DRGs subject to the postacute care (PAC) transfer policy from 30 to 182, effective October 1. Is your facility ready for this huge operational change? How will it affect your coding professionals’ daily responsibilities?
"I think it’s going to be a lot more difficult for a coder," says Glenn Krauss, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPUR, an independent consultant from Maryville, TN. "If you have standards for how many records you need to code every day--and let’s say the average is 20-25 inpatient records--and you have more DRGs [for which] you need to make sure you have the correct discharge disposition, that will certainly take more time for a coder."
