Follow these tips to avoid improperly leading the physician
Coders are often in the unenviable position of walking a tightrope. If they don’t query a physician, they risk failing to code for services that the physician and hospital provided, which means the hospital won’t be reimbursed properly for the patient’s stay.
If they do query, they risk leading the physician to document for a specific code that may not accurately reflect the patient’s clinical picture, therefore opening the facility to charges of fraud.
"Coders are always encouraged to assign the best DRG out there. In the past, that best DRG, from a financial perspective, was viewed as the DRG that paid the most," says Sheryl Spohn, RHIA, director of coding assurance and corporate compliance for WellStar Health System in Atlanta.
