If you look closely at the 2006 ICD-9-CM codes, you’ll notice two new terms in the 410.xx series:
ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI)
The diseases are not new. In fact, the abbreviations have been around for a long time. However, people do not uniformly understand the meaning of these abbreviations--which should be on your hospital’s accepted abbreviation list.
