Coders who sift through piles of records in paper-based systems and manually assign codes to physicians’ notes could become auditors during the next decade, according to some technology vendors and healthcare experts.
"Instead of coding from scratch, coders will be validators," says Sean Benson, cofounder and vice president of ProVation Medical, Inc., in Minneapolis. "They will receive codes upstream and review them to make sure they’re accurate, edit them as necessary, and send the claim to billing."
Sound far-fetched? Think again. ProVation offers a coding engine that generates physician procedure notes and CPT codes from electronic prompts. Another vendor, Artificial Medical Intelligence (AMI), scans documents containing medical phrases and matches them with appropriate ICD-9-CM and CPT codes.
