Coders will play vital role in assigning new present-on-admission indicator
Coding professionals have become accustomed to changing regulations, guidelines, and code sets, and until now, the UB-92 has been able to capture those changes. But as ICD-10 and pay for performance wait in the wings, this antiquated billing form needs to be updated.
Enter the UB-04-the billing form that will replace the UB-92 effective March 1, 2007.
The UB form-which hasn't seen a major overhaul since 1992-will be designed to incorporate more clinical information, better align with the 837 HIPPA-electronic format, and accommodate future reimbursement models that will reward quality-based performance.
