She needs a hydraulic lift to get into a vehicle. But she represents an integral part of the community breast cancer screening program at St. Luke Cancer Institute's Center for Breast Care in Kansas City, MO.
"She" is "Sophie," a screening mammography unit, designed by PlanMed. And she is revolutionizing mobile mammography, says Coleen Johnson, senior director of program development at St. Luke's.
Small enough to fit into a standard-size minivan equipped with a hydraulic lift, Sophie folds for both storage and maneuverability. Unloaded, the machine looks similar to "a riding lawnmower. It's got handles and is self-propelled," says Johnson.
