Recently, a technologist at the Elizabeth Wende Breast Clinic in Rochester, NY, encountered a patient wearing a large bandage near her breast. She asked the patient what it was for, and as it turned out, it was lucky that she did-the patient had a highly contagious staph infection that she didn't think to mention, says Valerie Andolina, RT(R)(M), the imaging technology manager at Elizabeth Wende.
The facility asked the patient to reschedule her appointment, and the breast clinic quickly adopted a new policy. It now requires registration staff members to ask patients whether they have any infectious conditions when making an appointment, says Andolina.
