The new ICD-9-CM coding guidelines do not contain any major, sweeping changes, but they do include important guidance to help clarify coding sepsis and the proper use of pain code category 338. The guidelines also introduce a new code for avian flu.
CMS and the National Center for Health Statistics released the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting in September, and all changes took effect on October 1.
You can download a copy of the guidelines on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site at www.cdc.gov/nchs/datawh/ftpserv/ftpicd9/icdguide07.pdf.
