This is part two of a two-part series about proper positioning that began in last month's issue.
When properly positioned, the MLO view provides imaging of the maximum amount of breast tissue in one projection. It is therefore a critical part of a properly performed screening mammography examination.
But in order to accomplish its intended goal, the MLO must include the following elements:
The proper amount of pectoral muscle that has the appropriate shape and length
Clearly seen posterior tissue and retromammary fat, from axilla to inframammary fold (IMF)
Properly supported breast tissue that does not droop or sag
Well separated, properly compressed tissues
Absence of skin folds and/or motion
Present and open inframammary
