According to the Institute of Medicine, being awake for 18 hours produces an impairment equal to a blood alcohol level of .05%, and being awake for 24 hours produces impairment equal to a level of .10%.
Like alcohol, fatigue slows reaction time, saps energy, diminishes attention to detail, and degrades communication and decision-making skills—all things that hinder patient safety.
In a separate study, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that overworked nurses are three times more likely to make serious mistakes, including:
- Medication errors, accounting for more than half of all mistakes
- Deviation from standard nursing practices
- Charting mistakes
- Errors in transcribing information
