About the Authors:
CARYL A. SERBIN, RN, BSN, LHRM
Caryl Serbin, President of Surgery Consultants of America, has more than twenty years of experience in the healthcare industry, with the last fifteen years spent in ambulatory surgery administration and consulting. She is the past developer and administrator of multiple outpatient surgery centers in south Florida and has served as the Licensed Healthcare Risk Manager for several facilities. Ms. Serbin has provided consulting services for a variety of ambulatory surgery centers, including orthopedic, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, pain management, urology, and multi-specialty. She has developed, managed, and obtained Joint Commission accreditation with commendation for both freestanding and hospital-based ambulatory surgery centers. Previously, Ms. Serbin served as the administrator for Physicians Surgery Center, a Health South surgery center (formerly Surgical Care Affiliates, the largest surgery center company in the United States).
JUDITH L. ENGLISH
Judith English is Vice-president of Business Operations for Surgery Consultants of America and Surgery Center Billing. She has more than thirty-five years experience in the healthcare industry, including ambulatory surgery center and medical practice coding, billing, accounts receivable management, compliance, accounts payable, payroll, and credentialing. Ms. English is the past general manager of the Clinicon Corporation, a firm specializing in ophthalmology products. Ms. English has taught scheduling, insurance verification, patient financial counseling, medical records, coding, billing, collections, compliance, and HIPAA regulations to ambulatory surgery center and physician office personnel.
