How much RUG revenue is your facility missing out on?
The value of the Medicare dollar versus the cost of a Medicare resident is a variable that skilled nursing facilities (SNF) must address to ensure their financial survival. Nursing homes have had to contend with the RUG 53 payment system for a year now, yet many are missing the Resource Utilization Groups (RUG) that pay the highest, even though SNFs are providing the proper services.
Listen to Capturing Extensive Services and ADLs for SNF PPS: Navigate RUGs 53 and Reach your Reimbursement Potential, where our experts will show you how to navigate the RUGS 53 system so you don’t miss out on reimbursement from the top 9 RUGs when it's appropriate.
Participants will also learn:
- how to RUG into the 9 highest acuity categories
- what nursing homes are missing in coding extensive services and in terms of ADL coding
- how to get information and documentation from the hospital to support your claim with specific examples
Far too many SNF staff members simply “code and wait” for the computer to give them the RUG score. The knowledge you gain from this presentation will allow you to be proactive in your own facility’s Medicare reimbursement outcome.
AGENDA
- Idiosyncratic behavior of RUG-53 and the new 9 categories
- Temporary payment system in response to Congressional mandate to address ancillary costs; Budget neutral
- Case Mix Index (CMI) and the "Super Grouper"
- New CMI for RUG-III 53
- Medicare pays according to CMI rather than Hierarchy (which is the way we all learn)
- Impact of CMI on best rates or knowing when to strive for the new 9 categories and when the "old" rehab categories are the better choice
- Capturing all clinical indicators and the best ADL index (minimum of 7 ADL index points for 9 new categories)
- How to audit your current processes
- IV fluids and IV meds; ensuring you capture both
- Using the assessment reference date (ARD) to capture the best rates
- Impact of selecting an ARD or "What difference does a day make?"
- Strategies for the five-day and readmission/return assessment (projection and therapy orders)
- Strategies for later assessments (no projections and actual therapy minutes)
- Case study
- Identify tools that should be used
- Identify structure and order
- Achieve a balanced team approach between therapy and nursing to achieve the best resident outcomes and fair reimbursement (use all therapy modalities possible)
A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Discuss elements of RUG-III 53, CMI, and the 9 new categories
- Explain when the 9 new categories are and are NOT the best option to capture the best rate
- Describe the key factors that staff must consider in the pre-admission screening process
- Identify practical techniques that can be used to select the best assessment reference date
- Identify flaws in their current system navigating RUG- III 53
