Pain Management: Evidence-Based Tools and Techniques for Nursing Professionals
presented on March 7, 2007
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recently released a special report on the health of the nation—Health, United States 2006—one in four U.S. adults have suffered a day-long bout of pain in the past month, and one in 10 say the pain lasted a year or more. In addition, one-fifth of adults 65 years and older said they have experienced pain in the past month that persisted for more than 24 hours.
The Joint Commission mandates that organizations comply with the following requirements:
- Patients have a right to have their pain assessed and reassessed regularly
- Patients have a right to adequate pain treatment
- Language cannot be a barrier to pain assessment and treatment
- Patients should be involved in their plan of care, including pain management
- Patients should be educated about their pain medication and any potential side effects
Are you or your staff having trouble assessing pain? Are you reassessing adequately?
You are not alone. Pain is often under-treated because staff nurses are not aware of the best evidence-based pain assessment and treatment methods to use with patients. The difficulty is enhanced when dealing with pediatric patients, geriatric patients, and those patients who cannot communicate their pain verbally.
