Important clarification on CMS' announcement on the NPI standard
Listen to this important 90-minute audioconference and learn everything you need to know about CMS’ recent announcement it will delay enforcement of the national provider identifier (NPI) standard for one year.
CMS’ announcement included a statement that it will allow covered entities who establish contingency plans in good faith to avoid penalties until May 23, 2008. The audioconference will cover the good faith and contingency plan conditions, and provide you with tips for working with trading partners to develop workable systems for ensuring payment and moving forward with NPI use.
Be careful with regard to Medicare
Keep in mind that the CMS decree only permits use of contingency plans; it does not mandate their use. So if a payer insists that it will only accept the NPI after May 23, 2007, providers might have to comply. Medicare has announced that it may do this as early as July.
