AUDIOCONFERENCE ON TAPE, CD OR AUDIO ARCHIVE
Sponsored by Briefings on Hospital Safety
presented on June 28, 2007
Your environmental management programs and practices are under more regulatory scrutiny than ever, including a heightened focus on pharmaceutical waste.
Regulations once imposed primarily in manufacturing and processing plants are now being strictly enforced in hospitals, such as:
- mishandling common pharmaceuticals, such as epinephrine, according to EPA hazardous waste regulations
- discharging wastewater with minute concentrations of laboratory waste
- review of underground oil storage tanks, asbestos management practices, refrigerant disposal, and pesticide use.
The EPA’s regulations, covering air, water, and a variety of hazardous materials can be confusing, but failure to comply puts healthcare institutions at risk, both in terms of safety and financial liability.
<
Likewise, OSHA, the Department of Transportation, and other federal agencies are also enforcing related environmental laws. Listen to this audioconference and obtain strategies on how to prepare for environmental audits and to maintain compliant programs. Expert Steven B. Bloom, MS, reviews environmental compliance in healthcare, including what areas inspectors are currently targeting. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of the applicable regulations and a framework to manage, document, and update compliant programs.
AGENDA
- Regulatory agencies
- What to expect during an EPA (or other agency) “multimedia” audit
- EPA regulations and frequent citations in healthcare

A 30-minute question & answer session follows the program.
At the conclusion of this program, you’ll be able to:
- Identify the major EPA and other regulations that affect hospitals
- Summarize what hospitals can expect during an environmental audit and how to better ensure a compliant program
- Describe frequent EPA citations in hospitals
- Explain the importance of complying with hazardous pharmaceutical waste regulations
