For the first time in 20 years, CMS made major revisions to the complication and comorbidity (CC) list. Coders who have been accustomed to CMS’ old list have to learn a completely new classification structure with several hundred changes— all of which are meant to usher in the new Medicare Severity DRGs (MS-DRGs)— including the new classification: major CC (MCC).

Keeping up with the changes can be overwhelming, and if you miss an MCC, it could mean a significant difference in payment. Capturing the correct CCs and MCCs also helps paint an accurate picture of the patient’s severity, which is all the more reason to familiarize yourself with the changes and understand the clinical rationale behind the deletions and additions.

Shannon McCall, RHIA, CCS, CPC, is director of coding and HIM at HCPro, Inc. where she serves as the lead instructor for two of the Certified Coder Boot Camps®, which cover physician and outpatient hospital coding and inpatient hospital facility coding. As a member of HCPro, Inc.'s consulting staff, she works with hospitals, medical practices, and other healthcare providers on a wide range of coding-related issues with a particular focus on coding reviews and audits. McCall has extensive experience with coding for both physician and hospital services.

Deborah Mange, BSN, RN, is the documentation coordinator at Elyria Memorial Hospital in Elyria, OH.  She has developed and implemented a documentation program for the two-campus hospital system, including education of physicians and coders, form development, and many reviews. Mange has more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare field including documentation improvement, case management, and homecare.
