Nancy Foster is the Vice President for Quality and Patient Safety Policy at the American Hospital Association. In this role, she is the AHA’s point person for the Hospital Quality Alliance, which is a public-private effort to provide information to consumers on the quality of care in American hospitals. Nancy is the AHA’s representative to the National Quality Forum, is the AHA’s liaison to the Joint Commission’s Board, co-chairs AHRQ’s Patient Safety Coordination Center Advisory Committee, and represents the AHA at the AQA (formerly known as the Ambulatory Quality Alliance). She provides advice to hospitals and public policy makers on opportunities to improve patient safety and quality, including regulatory standards,
Prior to joining the AHA, Nancy was the Coordinator for Quality Activities at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). In this role, she was the principal staff person for the Quality Interagency Coordination Task Force, which brought Federal agencies with health care responsibilities together to jointly engage in projects to improve quality and safety. She also led the development of patient safety research agenda for AHRQ and managed a portfolio of quality and safety research grants in excess of $10 million.
She is a graduate of Princeton University and has completed graduate work at Chapman University and Johns Hopkins University. In 2000, she was chosen as an Excellence in Government Leadership Fellow.
Daniel W. Varga, MD, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for SSM Health Care - St. Louis in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Varga is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Louisville Affiliated Hospitals, where he served as Chief Medical Resident. Dr. Varga is a Board Certified general internist and was a founding member and Past President and Medical Director of Community Medical Associates, the largest primary care group practice in Louisville, Ky. He is a Past President of the Greater Louisville (KY) Medical Society, has served as a Trustee of the Kentucky Medical Association (KMA), and is currently the Immediate Past President of the KMA and Chairman of the KMA Physician Workforce Committee.
Dr. Varga currently serves on the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician Consortium for Public Reporting, and is co-chairman of the National Quality Forum (NQF) Technical Advisory Panel on Implementation of Ambulatory Care Performance Measures and Steering Committee on Healthcare Associated Infections.
Fred W. Hosler, M.D., MPA, FACP, FACPE, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical OfficerAlegent Health, Omaha, Nebraska. As Alegent Health’s senior vice president and chief medical officer, Fred Hosler, M.D., plays a key role in establishing an environment of constructive engagement with Alegent Health physicians. In the area of physician collaboration, Dr. Hosler brings his expertise in physician leadership development and the creation of physician alliances to improve the delivery of health services and the health of the Alegent Health community.
Dr. Hosler is board-certified in internal medicine. He most recently served as senior vice president of Medical Affairs and as corporate compliance officer at the Methodist Medical Center of Illinois. His career spans 25 years, including experience in private practice and exceptional work in operational performance and clinical outcome management.
