Protect patients from falls – and your bottom line

CMS has joined The Joint Commission and a chorus of patient safety advocates demanding that hospitals protect their patients from falls. Starting October 1, 2008, CMS will no longer pay to treat patients who fall and suffer from injuries while under your care. Whether it’s a minor fracture, or a major hip replacement, if a patient falls in your hospital, your facility will now have to foot the bill.

Beyond the financial costs, however, is the human toll: Patient falls are the sixth leading sentinel event, according to The Joint Commission Web site. They are also among the most common incidents reported in institutions, according to Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ). And among those over age 70, falls is the fifth leading cause of death.

Learn how to protect your patients during our 90-minute audioconference, Patient Falls:

Assessment, intervention, and communication strategies to prevent harm. Our three expert speakers will tell you how their health systems reduced fall rates to levels well below the national average. They will also share how they promoted organization-wide awareness of falls and improved communication among staff members about injuries.
