MEET THE SPEAKERS

Kurt Patton served as executive director of Accreditation Services at The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) for more than seven years until his retirement in December 2005.  In this role, he worked with all types of accredited organizations seeking to be re surveyed, and new organizations seeking to become accredited. Patton managed the post survey process for all accreditation programs, which includes issuance of accreditation decisions and reports as well as monitoring the organizational database for intra-cycle monitoring events. He also supervised the staff involved in pre-survey support and analysis of organizational data to design survey duration and complement, as well as the logistics and routing of surveyors throughout the nation. Patton was responsible for business development in the Hospital Accreditation Program, and the development of a Critical Access Hospital program. He also was a frequent presenter at Joint Commission educational programs including Executive Briefings.

Bill Wightkin, Pharm.D., R.Ph, Director of Pharmacy, OSF Saint James Medical Center in Pontiac, Illinois. He has more than 25 years experience in hospital pharmacy practice. He received his undergraduate degree in pharmacy from Drake University and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas. His interests involve patient safety, medication safety, and clinical pharmacy practice. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Safety Sciences from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His hospital, under his direction, has been active in addressing safety concerns with anticoagulants, narcotic analgesics, hypoglycemic agents and fluids and electrolytes. In 2007, OSF Saint James was named a Mentor Hospital for the IHI’s 5 million lives campaign.
