Course description:

Basic OSHA Training covers initial OSHA training for employees new to the healthcare industry. Medical facilities maintain an OSHA safety program to ensure the safety of all employees. Learning objectives:

At the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following learning objectives:

  • Discuss OSHA and its role in promoting worker safety.
  • Describe how to respond in the event of smoke or fire in the work area
  • Describe how to use a fire extinguisher to put out a small contained fire
  • Discuss how to recognize bloodborne diseases, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV
  • Describe how your employer's OSHA program helps you prevent exposures to bloodborne pathogens
  • List what to do if you are exposed to a bloodborne disease
  • Ensure that engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and safe work practice controls are in place for all identified potentially infectious materials in your practice
  • Locate your practice's OSHA Safety manual containing the written hazard communication plan and an exposure control plan for bloodborne pathogens
  • State which chemicals are hazardous and how you can protect yourself from exposure to them at work

Faculty:

Dr. Sheila Dunn is a nationally recognized expert in federal laboratory and OSHA regulations. She received a Doctor of Arts degree in Clinical Laboratory Science Education in 1986 and a Master of Science in 1982 from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Sarah Alholm has developed successful safety training programs for both the healthcare and aviation industries. She received her Masters Degree in Human Factors (a science examining human performance and interactions in task-oriented environments) from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2002 and holds a Bachelors Degree in Biology from the United States Air Force Academy.

Intended audience:

All employees in all outpatient medical facilities.
