CMS Interpretive Guidelines
Product Description:
AUDIO CONFERENCE ON CD OR AUDIO ON-DEMAND
Sponsored by The CMS Survey Coordinator's Handbook
presented on September 18, 2008
The past year has seen the release of two sets of highly anticipated—and extremely challenging—Interpretive Guidelines from CMS: restraints and infection control.
The subject of restraints is a complicated and controversial one, and the new Interpretive Guidelines are an attempt to clarify CMS' expectations. Major differences exist in standards for restraints with patients exhibiting aggressive/violent behavior and those who are restrained for medical or surgical reasons, It is imperative that you demonstrate to CMS that you are using each one appropriately for the right patient population.
Similarly, CMS has seen additions and changes to Interpretive Guidelines for infection control. Changes this year focus on three areas: inclusion of ambulatory care, use of bundles, and log requirement clarification. Specific guidelines have also been issued for hospital leadership to follow.
Is your staff prepared for the surveyors' visit?
Listen to HCPro's 90-minute audio conference CMS Interpretive Guidelines: Understand Changes and Challenges for Restraint, Infection Control. Patient safety expert Susan Hendrickson (Via Christi Wichita Health Network) and infection control expert Candace Friedman (University of Michigan Health System) discuss how you can demonstrate to CMS surveyors that your facility is in compliance with restraint and infection control standards. You'll discover how to develop the proper documentation to perform well during a survey, including appropriate restraint-death reports and examples of improving infection control in the area of ambulatory care. Department heads are encouraged to have their specialists in infection control and restraints attend this program to ensure they are doing everything possible to provide a detailed and accurate paper trail to satisfy CMS' raised expectations.
At the end of this audio conference, you will be able to:
- Differentiate between the need for restraints in aggressive/violent behavior situations vs. their use for medical/surgical reasons
- Determine staff training needs to satisfy the requirements for each restraint
- Understand CMS requirements for death reporting
- Understand the impact of new ambulatory care requirements on infection control standards
