Audio Conference on CD or Audio On-Demand

Sponsored by The Association of Clinical Documentation Specialists (ACDIS)

A program for clinical documentation improvement (CDI) professionals

presented on September 18, 2009

Clinical documentation improvement (CDI) programs are moving away from traditional models that use complications and comorbidities (CC) and major CCs (MCC) to capture a patient's condition.

The severity of illness (SOI) and risk of mortality (ROM) system provides a higher level of detail about a patient's condition and the care provided. Improving SOI and ROM indicators strengthens hospital quality data and physician report cards by more accurately detailing the nature of the patient's illness and expected outcome. And while those numbers are crucial to a hospital's success, an SOI/ROM focused program can also have a positive effect on revenue and help reduce compliance risk.

Listen to HCPro's 90-minute audio conference that features two speakers who have extensive experience in the CDI field. They lay the foundation for a strong SOI/ROM program and demonstrate how data is derived and used. They provide common query and clarification scenarios in the SOI/ROM system and explain commonly missed opportunities in the medical record, with an emphasis on the neurosurgery department. They also provide a case study of one hospital's successful transition to a SOI/ROM-based CDI program that you can use as a blue print to develop a successful program.

Note: This is an intermediate to advanced-level program. Participants in this audio conference should understand the workings of a clinical documentation improvement program. They should also have a basic understanding of coding concepts that govern selecting principal and secondary diagnoses.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this audio conference, you will be able to:
  • Define severity of illness/risk of mortality
  • Identify who is using this information and how to influence results
  • Understand the methodology used
  • Identify a problem service or specialty area
  • Implement a focused service or specialty review to improve SOI/ROM

TAKE A LOOK AT THE AGENDA:

    1. Foundation of SOI/ROM
      1. Who uses it
      2. How is the data used-hospital report cards and physician profiles
      3. Why to risk adjust your data
      4. How to engage physicians
      5. How to change your focus from a CC/MCC capture focused program
    2. Software system options
      1. What is available in the market, what should I look for?
      2. How hospitals can use these tools to understand complexity of cases
      3. Payer adoption of APR-DRGs
    3. Differences between SOI/ROM and traditional CDI programs
      1. Additional diagnoses that impact SOI/ROM
      2. Common query opportunities
      3. Commonly missed query opportunities and secondary diagnoses
      4. HIM/coding considerations
    4. University of Mississippi Medical Center case study
      1. Mortality reviews and the need for change
      2. Hospital-wide rollout and lessons learned
      3. OI/ROM opportunities in neurosurgery service line

A question and answer session follows the presentation.
