Today’s physician advisor (PA) plays a crucial role in maintaining revenue integrity in any provider setting. In this session, listeners will learn about the spectrum of PA activities at the hospital, the importance of consistency of the roles and responsibilities of a PA, best practices of a PA, accountabilities and infrastructure of a PA program, and how to create a business case for having a PA at your facility.

The Physician Advisor’s Role in Managing Observation and Condition Code 44
With so many regulatory changes, staying updated on observation is key to a physician advisor’s success. This session discusses the Medicare definition of observation (Medical and Surgical), cases most suitable for observation, and the condition code 44 process.

The Physician Advisor’s Role in the RAC Process
The permanent RAC program is upon us and physician advisors play an integral role in helping providers manage RACs—from concurrent case reviews to managing appeals. In this session listeners will learn how to prevent denials, including planning strategies, physician education, and secondary review. In addition, listeners will learn how to operationalize advanced appeal techniques.

Panel Discussion: Qualities and Skills of an Effective Physician Advisor

Pay for Performance–Present on Admission
In this session listeners will learn about the role of physician advisors in mastering two pressing Medicare initiatives: Pay for Performance and Present on Admission (POA). Listeners will learn techniques to manage pay for performance as well as how to monitor results—ongoing and retrospectively. They will also learn how to manage POA indicators in the busy hospital environment.

Meet the Faculty
Kenneth R. Rubin, MD, MA, MSHCM, FACEP, has been a physician advisor at the St. Francis Hospital—The Heart Center for more than eight years. He is residency-trained in emergency medicine and has served as department chair.Michael Yanuck, MD, is president of Michael Yanuck MD, PA Medical Consulting. He provides consulting services to the medical industry, including hospitals, hospital groups, managed care organizations, and medical practice groups.
Joe Zebrowitz, MD, is executive vice president and senior medical director of EHR in Newtown Square, PA. He also works as a physician advisor and medical director at EHR client hospitals, leading clinical denial management and length of stay programs, quality initiatives, documentation and compliance programs and independent peer review processes.
