Big Pharma Performance Before, During and Beyond the Global Recession

Product Description:

A comparative analysis of leading pharmaceutical company sales dynamics over the period 2005-14

Between 2009 and 2014, the expiry burden will reach a tipping point, sending year-on-year Pharma sales growth rates negative in 2012 and 2013. In total, expiries are expected to cut 2009–14 prescription pharmaceutical sales growth from 4.3% to 0.3%. If Pharma is to avoid a continuation of the 2005–08 stock market revaluation of its worth, it must take action.

Three broad strategies are available:

  • Repositioning into ‘high-growth’ segments of the sector and emerging markets
  • Diversifying away from branded pharmaceuticals
  • Cost cutting

These strategies can be pursued through licensing, layoffs and restructuring, and M&A. Many Pharma’s have already begun to take such steps, most radically seen with the mega-mergers of Pfizer-Wyeth and Merck-Schering-Plough. Nevertheless, as the economy has moved into recovery in Q309, Pharma has already reverted to its 2005–08 trend of underperforming the wider stock market, a trend that is expected continue unless Pharma fails to find a way of overcoming the expiry threat or the recovery falters and the global economy falls into a double-dip recession.
